CRIMINAL TAX INVESTIGATIONS

The IRS and the U.S. Department of Justice accomplish a surprisingly high number of successful criminal tax prosecutions based upon the government’s initial interview with the taxpayer. Recently, the IRS has returned to investigating general criminal tax cases. Following Sept. 11, 2001, Congress enacted the PATRIOTS Act, intended to target terrorism by investigating certain financial transactions. The Criminal Investigations arm of the IRS is involved in overseeing and reviewing evidence gathered pursuant to the PATRIOTS Act. Clearly, criminal tax investigations are an effective tool used by the government to improve compliance.
